Chapter 12

NEW MEXICO STATE POLICE, DISTRICT 5, ALBUQUERQUE APRIL 8, 1981 8:30 AM

Agent Tom English met with Julie's extremely distraught sister at his office. The sister, although anxious to be of assistance, could offer no information which might aid in the investigation of her younger sister's murder. All she could tell him was that Julie had no known enemies and that she had no idea who would want to kill her.

DOWNTOWN PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL APRIL 8, 1981 10:30 AM

Colene didn't feel well enough to do anything other than watch TV. She had the choice of watching soap operas or games shows. She picked game shows. Her favorite game show, Hollywood Squares, was on. She laughed at the crazy answers the celebrities concocted, making her forget her troubles for the 30 minutes it was on.

Every day she improved a little, but she was still in a lot of pain and on a lot of drugs. This particular morning, Dr. Phillips came by to see her and was happy that she was doing well. He noted that her abdomen was a bit distended and gassy and he advised her to hold off on eating solid food for a day or two. He told her that her wounds looked good – no obvious infection.

And he had even more good news . . . the drains in her neck were coming out today. He also told her that someone would come by later to take a chest X-Ray in order to get a better picture of the knife fragment embedded in her ribs.

NM STATE POLICE, DISTRICT 5, ALBUQUERQUE APRIL 8, 1981 5 PM

Tom English spent his entire day working the coed murder case. People in the UNM area, especially the women, were extremely apprehensive about having a murdering rapist on the loose. They wanted him caught.

Agent English returned to the Frontier Restaurant and spoke to the manager again. He showed him a composite drawing of the assailant. The manager said that it looked like a Spanish guy who occasionally loitered around the Earthrise Pool Hall, which was located directly behind the Frontier. The manager also said that this guy had worn a neck brace a couple of months back and he might go by the name Cisco, in addition to having the AKA of Raymond.

The detective then contacted Laura who worked at the Frontier on the night of April 5, 1981. Laura stated that she remembered seeing Julie that night. She said that she had spoken with her right before she and her friend left the restaurant that evening.

DOWNTOWN PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL APRIL 8, 1981 11PM

“How's Julie?” Colene asked, via notepad, to just about everyone that came by. “Where's Julie?” It wasn't like Julie to not visit her in the hospital. Colene hadn't seen her friend in two days and she wanted to know how she was, how she had gotten away and if she had gotten hurt.

But nobody answered her. Every time it came up, the question was evaded or ignored. The response was either a large amount of silence or a giant amount of noise, but either way there was no answer.
